While most of her peers head back to school, this fall Caitlin MacIntyre says she will be taking a semester off to explore college in a whole new way on the Soulforce Q Equality Ride. From October 1 to November 13, MacIntyre and 16 other young adults plan to travel on a bus to 15 faith-based universities with policies or campus climates that exclude GLBT students.

Our prediction for scariest costume among this year’s revelers: Sarah Palin look-alikes, because the few requirements for the costume are a pair of librarian glasses and a shotgun.

In this election season, the Gay History Project attempted to interview both the Democratic and Republican candidates for president—just as we attempted to interview the top two candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination for the spring primary. The format for both candidates was to be the same: the same questions, with no follow-up questions and the same time limit. Since April, we have repeatedly reached out to Republican Sen. John McCain’s press representative Jill Hazelbaker by phone, letter, and e-mail.
The idea of Black Gay History is about as far out there for some as is Gay History Month, and the two curiosities are not unrelated. The first attempt to set aside a time to disseminate information on minorities was Negro History Week, invented by the black (straight) historian Carter G. Woodson around 1926. He chose February to honor the births of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, and he and his students lectured to clubs and fraternities, sponsored essay contests, and published popular textbooks. The impulse to reach a wider audience and instill pride caught on with Women’s History Week, and then month, and so now let there be Gay History Month. Why not?
TOP HISPANIC WOMAN Cristina Martinez, publisher and chief executive officer of the Gay & Lesbian Rainbow Pages, was recently named Most Inspiring Hispanic Woman of Houston among a field of seven other community-focused women. Sponsored by the Houston Comets in conjunction with State Farm Insurance, the award was presented to Martinez on September 2 from Rita Howard, VP of State Farm Insurance, during half time of the Houston Comets against the New York Liberty game.
