Sink Your Teeth into OutSmart’s Gayest & Greatest

By Steven Foster

PeopleCommunityBusinesses/ServicesDiningAfter DarkGalvestonOCT08cover

Since Bram Stoker first hit coffin-covering paydirt over a hundred years ago, vampires have never lost their doomed, immortal appeal. But lately the hemoglobin-gobbling ciphers have never been hotter—or sexier. Gay Oscar-winner and hit-maker Alan Ball returns to his Six Feet Under home HBO to grant the cable net some desperately needed (after)life with the very adult, Southern-sultry-scary True Blood. Soon, Mormon housewife-turned-new-J. K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer will see her bestselling series of Twilight novels transformed into the next big film franchise, giving the teen set their Type A fix. Even here! TV’s gay pornstar-studded The Lair is back for another season (for better or worse). In keeping with the vamp-in-vogue zeitgeist, OutSmart concocted a little Draculine confection of our own to celebrate the 12th annual Gayest & Greatest Readers’ Choice issue. First, we seduced two of H-town’s hottest actors into getting in touch with their dark side. Houston stage vet Shelley Calene-Black bared her alabaster jugular for new Alley Theatre ingénue, a fang-baring Emily Neves. Then we turned to in-demand fashion fotog John Conroy, who shot the Sapphic bloodsuckers in between hopping planes for gigs in Miami and Chicago. After a little help from makeup artist extraordinaire Marc Harvey, and the magic of visual artist/dentist Andy Orjuela, the glamorously ghoulish cover was laid to rest, and is now resurrected in your eager clutches. As we’ve done for over a decade, OutSmart turned to you, our readers, to find out who you love, what you like, and where you go. And this year, the process went green. We favored electronic voting on the web, limiting conventional paper ballots to a select few evenings, making them available only at ballot parties at various clubs and restaurants around Houston, Clear Lake, and Galveston. Since thousands of you told us who you thought were the Gayest and the Greatest in Space City and beyond, we thought it fitting that some of your favorites share a few of their personal raves with you—from who does their hair, and where they furnish their lair, to who shakes up their most bloody Mary. In the spirit of the Halloween season, we even asked our celebrity-studded winners a few spooky questions. So pour a glass of your favorite crimson cocktail, curl up with someone you love, and sink your teeth into our most wicked Gayest & Greatest issue ever.
