Spirit Always Lives

Be Sociable, Share!

Children of powerful people start killing their parents. Anxious to understand, the U.S. government calls in Phillip and his team of Indigo Children. Phillip quickly realizes his earliest protégé (and ex-lover) is behind the murders. Set partly in Houston by a local author, this is a tale of good versus evil, redemption, and second chances. Much as I want to say I don’t really like this book, I found it difficult to put down. — Review: Angel Curtis

The Slow Fix

Be Sociable, Share!

In The Slow Fix, Ivan Coyote reminds us that the small details of everyday life can be the stuff of high art. Living a life that continually subverts social conventions around gender is damn hard work. Coyote’s reports of this struggle are not only great stories, but a reminder of how truly the personal is political. This book is a must for anyone trying to understand the gender wars. — Review: Angel Curtis

Ruins

Be Sociable, Share!

Obejas’ third novel revisits her usual themes of memory and identity and how slippery they can be. Here, salao (unlucky) protagonist Usnavy, a dedicated believer in the Cuban revolution, has his ideals challenged: old comrades now do shady business for U.S. dollars or build rafts to escape to Florida or face the return of a child who left as a son but is now a woman. This is one of our best writers, giving us human characters in all their comedy and tragedy. — Review: Neil Ellis Orts

She Done Her Wrong

Be Sociable, Share!

This past winter, if you’re like most people, you spent a day or two at home on the sofa, curled up in a warm blanket, watching TV and nursing a cold.

When you’re sick, those daytime showings of black-and-white movies are quaintly perfect for recuperating. Some of them are even still funny.

What A World: Face Value

Be Sociable, Share!

Even now, I’m not entirely sure how it happened.

One morning last month I awoke with a bruise. And this wasn’t one of those little knock-your-arm-on-the-bookshelf bruises that can be easily explained away or hidden by long sleeves.
