The Fort Bend LGBT Political Caucus announces Board Members for 2011

At the Fort Bend LGBT Political Caucus (FBLGBTPC) monthly meeting, board members were voted on to serve for 2011. Fiona Dawson, 2010 president announced that due to personal and work commitments she is to move back into Harris County, therefore in accordance with the Caucus by-laws, cannot remain as President. However, as there are places for up to two non-Fort Bend residents on the Caucus board, she was voted on to serve in an at-large position. Ms. Dawson said, “I firmly believe in the necessity and value of the Caucus in Fort Bend and will continue to volunteer to see its efficacy as far as I can.”

Edgardo Martinez, Victim of Hit-and-Run Accident

A local gay man, Edgardo Martinez, was fatally wounded on January 18, 2011, after suffering injuries when hit by a car and thrown into the side of a Metro train near the Reliant Center at about 5:45 a.m. that morning. The accident was a hit and run, and the driver fled the scene. Edgardo died on January 20 at Memorial Hermann Hospital.

SLDN Statement on GAO Report of “Don’t Ask” Costs

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), a national, legal services and policy organization dedicated to ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT), released a statement today on a new audit reported in this afternoon’s Washington Post, which shows the military spent about $193.3 million from 2004-2009 to fired and replace approximately 3,660 service members discharged under DADT.

New Hospital Visitation Regulations for LGBT Families Go into Effect Tuesday

On Tuesday, federal regulations regarding patients’ hospital visitation rights will go into effect. These new regulations require all hospitals participating in Medicaid and Medicare programs – virtually every hospital in the country – to permit patients to designate visitors of their choosing and prohibit discrimination in visitation based on a number of factors, including sexual orientation and gender identity.
