‘Chicago’ Blows into Houston
Much-lauded musical features the versatile John O’Hurley
As far as legendary Broadway musicals go, it’s the right up there with the legendary-est. Since Chicago’s 1996 opening on that Great White Way, Fred Ebb, John Kander, and Bob Fosse’s gangster-girl musical set largely in prison holds the record as Broadway’s longest-running musical revival, the second longest-running musical production currently playing, and the fifth longest-running production, overall. And then, there are those six Tony awards . . .
This month, Society for the Performing Arts brings the razzle-dazzle of Chicago to Houston for eight shows, and caps the run by welcoming John O’Hurley in the role of the slippery singing attorney, Billy Flynn.
O’Hurley, who includes the distinction of having made People magazine’s “Sexiest Men Alive” list, is perhaps best known for playing “J. Peterman” on the now-in-syndication Seinfeld.
But you already knew that. You may not have realized, however, that O’Hurley is also an accomplished author. His first two books, It’s OK to Miss the Bed on the First Jump: And Other Life Lessons Learned from Dogs and Before Your Dog Can Eat Your Homework, First You Have To Do It made the New York Times’ best-sellers list.
Acting. Writing. What else? Oh yes—O’Hurley’s independently produced CD Peace of Our Minds cracked the Top 20 of Billboard’s music charts in 2005.
As if all that weren’t enough to keep him occupied, O’Hurley also hosted the long-running game show Family Feud for four years. Perhaps People should start a “Busiest Men Alive” list.
