Died Lorene Pouncey Born October 18, 1921, in North Little Rock, Arkansas, Lorene Pouncey died December 4, 2011, at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Amos J. Pouncey and Mammie Price Pouncey; her brother, Jack Pouncey; and sister, Joanna Pouncey Higginbotham. Her life partner of 29 years, Sandi Glorfield, of Houston; her niece, Beth Newton, of Greenwood Village, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews survive her. After serving in the United States Air Force as a First Lieutenant, Pouncey earned Bachelor of Arts degrees form University of Texas–Austin and University of California–Berkley, and her master’s degree from University of Houston. She pursued a career as a librarian at the Hunting Library in San Marino, CA, University of Illinois, and Library of Congress in Washington, DC, retiring from the University of Houston in 1978 with a Professor Emerita status. Her extensive research and poetry have been published in South America, Europe, and the United States; among the projects she researched were artist Judy Chicago’s Birth Project and Marguerite Johnston’s Houston: The Unknown City. A member of Brigid’s Place, Lesbians Over Age Fifty, and the Houston Poetry Feast, Pouncey requested that memorials be made to Brigid’s Place at Christ Church Cathedral in lieu of flowers.
