DC Cops Probe Killing of Transgendered Person

WASHINGTON – District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray says a transgender person has been fatally shot, but police say there’s no indication that it was a hate crime.

The killing happened Tuesday in the 6110 block of Dix Street NE. The victim’s name has not been released.

Gray says the investigation is continuing and no motive has been determined. But he says bias based on sexual orientation or gender identity cannot be tolerated.

The D.C. Council held a hearing earlier this month to discuss the police department’s response to hate crimes.

AJ Singletary of Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence says any violence against members of the gay, lesbian and transgender community is concerning and needs to be looked into.
