Lesbians Over Age Fifty (LOAF) Kicks Off Approach to Quarter-century Anniversary

By Nancy Ford

If one day you see a middle-aged or older woman wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with a penny loafer shoe, take note. That woman is likely a member of LOAF, Houston’s social networking group for lesbians who are 50 years of age and older. This month, the members of LOAF celebrate the group’s 24th anniversary with a special edition of their monthly “Meet ’n’ Greet,” set for Sunday, October 16, beginning at 2 p.m.

“Our October celebration is the kick-off to our quarter-century mark in 2012,” LOAF president Marilyn Abercrombie noted. “Twenty-five years of LOAFing!

“Arden Eversmeyer and five other founding mothers created LOAF,” Abercrombie said. “The first meeting on October 18, 1987, was attended by seven women.”

Since that first meeting, LOAF has grown to a membership of 205.

“It changes monthly as more women come out of the closet, or find themselves alone,” Abercrombie added. “LOAF provides a safe haven for lesbians to have social interaction, which is so important to our mental and physical well-being.”

LOAF also provides a monthly newsletter that features an activity calendar and reprints of articles of interest to senior women.

LOAF meets the third Sunday of each month at the GLBT Cultural Center, 401 Branard St. Members’ lesbian partners who are under age 50 are also eligible to join the group. loafhouston.org • 281/467-2578.
