OTEP in Houston
March 19: save the date
The metal band OTEP (fronted by poet, illustrator, author, and activist Otep Shamaya, pictured) has announced a U.S. tour that includes Houston. The tour supports the recent release of Shamaya’s final album Hydra.
A very serious and dedicated lesbian feminist and not afraid to stand up, speak her mind, and inform the masses, Shamaya’s passion for equality for all of humanity is very apparent and continues to transcend genres into the hearts of music fans worldwide.
She recently released her most sexually explicit music video to date for the single “Apex Predator” <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxVkAAh2D7M> (this marks the first time that she has put her sexuality on display), and it has already received over 192,000 views in just under five days! Directed by PR Brown (Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold, Chevelle), the video challenges phobias and hypocrisies, and delights the vices in your mind.
Hydra (1/22) is a concept album based on a graphic novel that she has been writing for two years. Produced by Ulrich Wild (Pantera, Static X, Deathklok, Deftones), Hydra has solidified OTEP’s place as one of the most prolific, unique, female-fronted metal groups of our time.
OTEP’s last studio album, Atavist, debuted at #58 on the Billboard Top 200 with 7,000 units sold in the first week in April of 2011. Their previous album, Smash the Control Machine, debuted at #47 on the Billboard Top 200 with over 10,000 units sold in the first week in August of 2009. They have sold over 550,000 albums in the U.S. alone and tens of thousands more albums internationally.
In 2010, OTEP was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Music Artist for Smash the Control Machine, along with Lady Gaga, The Rumors, and Adam Lambert.
See OTEP on Tuesday, March 19, at Scout Bar, 18307 Egret Bay Blvd. in East Houston. $16 advance, $20 door, doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. Scoutbar.com.
