The Dallas & Northeast and the Fort Worth North Central Texas Chapters of the Alzheimer’s Association will be hosting the LGBTQ Alzheimer’s Caregiver conference online, Friday, February 12, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm.

“Like any other group, the LGBTQ community is impacted by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias,” says Kathy Shockley, Program Director with the Dallas & Northeast Texas Chapter. “This presentation will give participants important information on Alzheimer’s disease with a look at inter-generational experiences and legal and financial resources.”

Audrey Kwik, Program Director with the Fort Worth North Central Texas Chapter says there will be something for everyone in attendance. “The program will include a special break-out for professionals on fostering cultural competency for eldercare professionals,” says Kwik. “We’re very excited to also have speakers such as Robert Emery and DR Hanson with the LGBT Coalition for Aging, and Sydney Kapp-Richardson with SAGE.”

Joining the Association in presenting the program is the Coalition for Aging LGBT and SAGE.

“We’re really grateful to the Coalition for Aging LGBT for securing local celebrity DeManda Refund to serve as the conference emcee,” says Shockley. “DeManda strives to raise awareness within the community while added a dash of fun. Her participation will be sure to make this a memorable event.”

DR Hanson with the Coalition for Aging says “We’re happy to be partnering with one of our favorite organizations, the Alzheimer’s Association, to help create new connections between the aging LGBT Community and the Alzheimer’s community! It is our hope that everyone who joins the conference will learn more about the unique needs both those communities have and more importantly, the unique needs both of these communities share. When we know better, we do better and both of these communities could use caregivers and advocates and friends who are dedicated to doing better.”

This program meets the requirements for 3.0 CEUs for social workers and licensed professional counselors.
